African history in British schools — is it taught well?

As a teacher I'm frustrated. African history in the national curriculum is tokenistic at best. I've been supplementing with my own resources — precolonial empires, the transatlantic trade, modern African independence movements. Has anyone found good African history educational resources they can share? Also interested to know if any parents are advocating at their children's schools.

Yewande from Glasgow. This is one of my biggest frustrations too. My nephew's entire African history education was one lesson about slavery. Nothing about Songhai, nothing about Kongo, nothing about the Scramble for Africa and what it actually meant. We have to supplement ourselves.

Kofi from Bristol. The Black Curriculum project has resources specifically designed for UK schools. Worth looking into. Also ACLT has been doing great supplementary work in this space.

Olumide from Leicester. My kids get one lesson on Africa during Black History Month. One lesson. In October. Then nothing for the rest of the year. Token gestures are not enough — we need systemic change.
